Education and Learning for Children and Young People

Hello there!

The Peace Museum’s provision in terms of education and learning has been re-vamped rather like the museum!

A Bradford Peacemaker explains to the city's Poet Laureate Gerard Benson, how to use an iPad to explore the Museum's exhibits.

We now offer sessions for children and young people in schools, at the Peace Museum (using the exhibitions and collection items), at Culture Fusion, or in the community as required.

Our Aims

We aim through our provision for education and learning :

To encourage voice, action and leadership

To explore equality, diversity, cohesion, peace and inclusion

To promote learning outside the classroom

To enthuse and inspire through imaginative, creative and innovative strategies

To educate, empower and enable all children to take up the challenge of peace

‘To have a future we need to know about the past.’    Otto Frank

The Curriculum

All our education provision is cross referenced to National Curriculum Programmes of Study, plus RE and SMSC as appropriate.

All our sessions have clear objectives and suggested outcomes that facilitate assessment for learning.

We have a number of supporting resources available to purchase from the Museum, books, activity packs, stories, CD ROMs, plus free web based materials.

We use a range of new technologies in our provision.

Current Provision for Children and Young People

Sport, Courage, Peace and Friendship – Sport and the Olympic and Paralympic values; stories, visual literacy and a range of activities closely linked to the topical theme of sport and London 2012. Suitable for all key stages. Jesse Owens and Luz Long (A Leap for Friendship), the Christmas truce 1914 (Football for Christmas), Walter Tull, Tani Grey Thomson, identity and nationality (Flying the Flag) and much more.

Peace Not Prejudice – Images and bite sized stories looking at the development of Bradford as a City of Peace, considers challenges, achievements, reasons to be cheerful and posing three major questions Who am I? Who are they? Who are we? Hand held learning  and blogging for peace is a feature of this exhibition based work. Suitable for all key stages.

The Peace Challenge – Commissioned and sponsored by the Soroptimists International (Bradford), The Peace Challenge explores peace-making and peacemakers then and now. The focus is on individuals with a local connection, whose actions have had an impact for good locally, nationally and globally.

It has a peer education element and encourages historical enquiry alongside active citizenship. Children and young people learn about the Peace Tree, William Forster, Richard Oastler, Margaret McMillan, Miriam Lord, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Kenneth and David Hockney. They consider the statement and question ‘This is what they did then. What can I do now?’

Designed particularly for key stage two, it is also possible to adapt this for older children.

Bradford Peacemakers explain their views on peace and remembrance to Museum visitors.

All these projects link closely to the Bradford peace season 2013 ‘Routes to Peace: inspiration, imagination and action’ and will continue to be offered in 2012 -13.

Bespoke Sessions

It is often possible to organise bespoke sessions.

For example: campaigns and campaigning, remembrance and poppies, pacifists and peace movements, conscientious objectors, women and peace, The Story of a Young Girl – Sadako Sasaki and Kokeshi-no-kai, art and peace, peace and reconciliation (e.g The Peace Basket a Rwandan story)

Schools doing work on the First or Second World War, the Holocaust and a range of Citizenship and History themes often find we can add a different perspective, to work with which pupils are engaged.

Intergenerational learning at the Museum
