Object of the Week

Friday 27th January is Holocaust Memorial Day. Holocaust Memorial Day provides an opportunity to learn from the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides to help create a safer, better future. On HMD we share the memory of the millions who have been murdered in the Holocaust and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur in order to challenge hatred and persecution in the UK today. For more information see the Holocaust Memorial Day website. The Theme for this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day is ‘Speak Up, Speak Out’.

Our Object of the Week is a Rwandan Peace basket which is woven from coiled papyrus reeds by members of `Avega’, a Rwandan survivors organisation for women affected by the genocide in 1994. Avega members weave peace baskets to symbolise the need for healing in their nation and to help support themselves and Rwanda’s many orphans; it provides women and their children with emotional, financial and healthcare support including provision of anti-retroviral drugs for those mambers with HIV/AIDS.
