Parts of these exhibitions may also from time to time be displayed in the Peace Gallery in Bradford. Exhibition 1 A Vision Shared: A history of the 20th Century Peace Movement The 20th century has been a time of constant conflict. As weapons have increased in power and effect, so the voices of ordinary people have cried out against the violence and slaughter. These voices have been heard through political action, through song, and through art. A Vision Shared demonstrates the diversity, the beauty and the passion of artworks produced from within the British peace movement during the 20th century. It includes original paintings, drawings, posters, photographs, banners and other materials from the First World War to the present. Accompanying text panels put the works into historical context. Included are works expressing horror and revulsion against the slaughter of war, efforts by artists to 'rob war of the last shred of its glory.' The bulk of the exhibition, however, expresses people's determination to rid the world of the scourge of war. Images of war are contrasted with the colourful visions of hope embodied in the many forms of popular art produced by people in the peace movement over the decades. As we move into the new millennium, the message of this exhibition is as poignant and relevant as ever. The Complete exhibition consists of 48 (24x2) A1 sized laminated panels and can be borrowed free of charge on payment of any transport costs. The stories come from many different communities in this multicultural city, reflecting a rich variety of experiences. Contributors are aged 8 to 80+, and their stories range across family life, peace and war, friendship and the peace inside. The exhibition is based on the book, Such a Journey: Peace Stories, Poems and Memories from Bradford People, edited by Frances McNeil and published by Bradford Libraries.
