Tomorrow (Friday 17th May) the Olympic Flame will arrive in the United Kingdom, ready to start out on its 70-day journey around the country on Saturday. In celebration of this fact, our Object of the Week is a book written by a home-grown inspirational Olympian, Philip Noel-Baker.

Philip Noel-Baker was a British politician, but also competed for the United Kingdom in the Olympic Games of 1912 in Stockholm, 1920 in Antwerp and 1924 in Paris. He won a silver medal for the 1500 metres in Antwerp in 1920. Noel-Baker was also a conscientious objector, organising and leading the Friends Ambulance Unit during World War I. From 1916 he became adjutant of the First British Ambulance Unit for Italy, for which he received various military medals from France, Italy and Great Britain.

Following the war, Philip Noel-Baker was involved in the formation of the League of Nations. In 1920 he began humanitarian work with Fridtjof Nansen in Russia, Greece and Asia-Minor. From 1924 his career as a Labour politician began. He was later involved in many humanitarian missions for the United Nations. All his work for peace, disarmament and humanitarian aid led to him being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1959.

Our Object of the Week is this book entitled “Man of Sport, Man of Peace: Collected Speeches and Essays of Philip Noel-Baker, Olympic Statesman 1889-1982″. It was compiled by Don Anthony and published in 1991 by Sports Editions Limited.

Tuesday (15th May) is International Conscientious Objector’s Day. The term ‘conscientious objector’, or ‘CO’ for short, was first used in World War 1 to describe those who objected to serving in the armed forces on moral grounds. When conscription was introduced in 1916, 16,000 such men claimed exemption from military service. Some felt that fighting went against their religion, others simply held all life sacred or saw the war as purely an upper class quarrel. Very few COs were granted full exemption by the tribunals judging their cases. Many accepted non-combatant roles such as ambulance work, however about 6,000 were imprisoned for refusing to help in the war effort in any way. The majority of these were employed by the government to grow food, but 1,500 refused. Twenty-four of these died in prison due to the treatment that they received. The remaining COs were not released until 1919 and were deprived of the right to vote until 1929.

International Conscientious Objector’s Day began in the early 1980s and the United Nations Commission on Human Rights recognised the right to conscientious objection in 1987. There are still many places where it is not acknowledged today.

Our Object of the Week is an oral history by conscientious objector Ron Mallone. He tells how he successfully represented himself at his tribunal and describes how many of these tribunals actually operated and how some people were more likely to ‘get off’, or get exemptions from fighting, than others. Those who were unlucky were sent to prison.

You can listen to a short clip of Ron’s interview here:

The University of Bradford hosted it’s annual Peace Jam event over the weekend of the 27th-29th April and this year’s visiting Nobel Peace Laureate, visited the Peace Museum on the Friday afternoon. Adolfo Perez Esquivel is from Argentina and a very well known artist as well as an internationally recognised peacemaker. He honored the Museum, by deciding to make an impromptu sketch of an image of the struggle for and the challenge of peace, faced by all of us.

We obviously were delighted at Aldofo leaving us this wonderful memento of his visit. It will be on display from the 3rd May at the Museum.

The book is published by the International Network of Museums for Peace. A must have for all interested in peace and conflict, peace-making, peace education and peace museums. Case studies include two from Bradford as well as many others from around the world. The theme of the case studies is very much on exploring the potential of peace museums to challenge people to become actively involved in peacemaking.

We attended a conference on sport and peace ‘Sport, Conflict and Reconciliation’ at Liverpool Hope University on the 28th April. It was a very useful and interesting day and the Museum was pleased to be able to share with delegates, the details of some of our education work on Sport, the Olympics and Peace (see image).

Our contribution was a descriptive account of how (and why) we have been using Sport, Courage, Peace and Friendship (SCPF) and the Playing for Peace (PfP) exhibition panels, with children and young people.

The PfP exhibition panels were on display at Liverpool Hope’s Archbishop Desmond Tutu Centre for War and Peace Studies, in the lead up to the conference.

Conference delegates (and anyone else who may be interested) are welcome to view the Peace Museum’s presentation on SCPF and PfP, by clicking on this link SCPF and PfP

Wednesday 25th April was Anzac Day. This is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand, originally to commemorate the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought during the First World War, although it is now used as a date to commemorate all those who died for their country in military operations.

Anzac day is seen as a solemn occasion in Australia and New Zealand, just like our own Remembrance Sunday in the UK, and it is a national holiday.

Our Object of the Week, though not specifically relating to ANZAC day is a peace poster which states “Australia Declares Peace on the World”. In the light of remembering those who have died, it is nice to hope for a future in which such deaths are rarer occasions. The slogan may be a reference to a book published in 1986 with the same title for the International Year of Peace, which contained The Findings of the National Inquiry into Peace and Justice in Australia. The poster dates from 1986 and was used as part of an exhibition to celebrate 10 years of Colchester CND in 1989. It was donated to the museum in 1999.

Description: The poster is from the International Fund for the development of physical education and sport. It was produced by UNESCO in 1986. The poster was designed by Swiss artist Hans Erni who is known for mixing science, mythology and history in his works. In 1978, the UNESCO General Conference set up an intergovernmental committee to lead UNESCO’s actions related to education in sport and sport in education.
