The Peace Museum has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help build The Peace Museum of the Future. As part of the campaign 20 ambassadors have chosen an object from our collection to talk about its importance in the history of peace and why it is significant to them.

Our Marketing and Press Assistant Jack, has chosen this Hearts and Rifles poster by Japanese designer Masuteru Aoba.

“Art and design is important in peace activism as a means to unify a movement or communicate a message and it can help us visualise protest movements from the past. From the iconic CND Symbol, to the rainbows of the LGBTQ+ movement and the bold graphics of Extinction Rebellion, The Peace Museum helps to chart the aesthetics of protest through its rich collection of posters, placards, badges, banners and ephemera.

This Hearts and Rifles poster was created by Japanese designer Masuteru Aoba, who created a series of posters promoting non-violent activism in the 70s and 80s. He was known for his ability to create poignant and bold posters with simple effective symbols. Persevering and sharing items like this is important because you can see how the energetic and playful approach has influenced the visual language of protest today.”
