2020 Objects of Peace: The Rainbow Scarf

The Peace Museum has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help build The Peace Museum of the Future. As part of the campaign 20 ambassadors have chosen an object from our collection to talk about its importance in the history of peace and why it is significant to them.

Richard Dunbar who is a Councillor for Bradford Council and a community organiser has chosen this rainbow scarf:

“We know that the history of the LGBTQ+ community has been one of struggle. The rainbow has become a visible symbol of community’s protest, resistance and hope. Whether this be at Pride events the world over, on picket lines in support of striking workers or at prominent locations in Bradford like City Hall or Valley Parade this symbol also becomes a statement of support for a community that have experienced  the harsh realities of prejudice and discrimination. We will continue to raise awareness where people spread false info. We will educate where people seek to divide and we will show love where people display hate. In Bradford we will continue to do everything  we can to ensure everyone in the LGBTQ+ community are proudly allowed to let their colours shine bright every day of the year.”
