“Ten Million Women for Ten Days at Greenham Common”

This year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) is themed Inspiring Change. Encouraging women all around the world to stand together and stand strong for what they believe in.

In keeping with this, we thought the object of the fortnight should reflect a time when women have come together to inspire change.

This poster calling for “ten million women to meet at Greenham Common” in 1984 and stage a ten day protest from the 20th of September to the 30th. As you may already know the  protests were against American cruise missiles being sited at the Greenham Common Royal Air force Base. While it is unlikely that ten million women were in attendance, women from all over England did attend many different protest at Greenham Common to stand up for what they believed in.

The printed statement: “stay as long as you possibly can to make the world we want” stands as a very strong message. Showing how these women devoted their time and energy to fight for what they really believed in.

Some of these women were mothers and wanted to make a safer world for their children to grow up in. Maybe you (or your parents) parents were at Greenham common? No matter what their individual reason, all these women believed that by standing together they can change the world. A touching message of how women came together to “Inspire Change” united by what they believed in.

On the 8th of March as we look back on and celebrate the many achievements of women, think about something you would like to change about the world and what you could do to inspire that change.
