Objects from The Peace Museum collection, Bradford.

The Peace Museum has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help build The Peace Museum of the Future. As part of the campaign 20 ambassadors have chosen an object from our collection to talk about its importance in the history of peace and why it is significant to them.

Si Cunningham, Chairperson of Bradford Civic Society has chosen this Have a Peaceful Week in Bradford Postcard

“I love this poster from the 1980s, and I assumed at first glance that it was a spoof. It wasn’t.

Its creation was actually a somewhat mischievous way for the City Council at the time to financially support the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament without breaching any grant-giving rules. The Council weren’t allowed to directly fund the CND, but they could advertise in the CND journal – hence the creation of this eye-catching piece of creative.

For me, it’s a reminder that Bradford has a slightly roguish and non-conformist history that has so often led to our city being a hotbed of innovation and social reform – a spirit that continues to this day.”
