Race Equality at The Peace Museum – Autumn 2021 Update

October 25, 20211:25 pmSeptember 29, 2023 1:33 pm

As important as black history month is, we know it’s vital to show commitment to race equality at the museum all year round. We also know that we can do better as a museum, and we wanted to update our supporters on what we’re doing to create an equality action plan which improves our employment practice, collections, and education programme:

  • We have just recruited two museum education freelancers with lived experience who are designing new education sessions on LGBTQ+ stories and race equality movements for the museum, including the intersections between the two topics. These sessions will be piloted in January 2022, before being delivered in schools.
  • We are taking steps to improve our recruitment practices, and will be working with Fair Museums Jobs to design a more inclusive process. Staff and trustees are undertaking training on a number of topics, including unconscious bias and anti-racist practice, as part of this redevelopment.
  • We are using this learning to inform our plans as we move premises. We will ensure that our new museum and galleries reflect all of the communities that make up our audience, and that we put diversity at the heart of our ongoing collecting.

Let us know about any additional changes you want to see to our approach to race equality at the museum, or to our collections, by emailing us at [email protected]. There will be more updates to follow in the next few months, including the publishing of our full Equality Action Plan.

The development of our Equality Action Plan is supported by grant money from the AIM Tackling Inequality Hallmarks Grant Award.
